After a beautiful drive through sand dunes at sunset, with the sand blowing across the road like snow, I knew this handmade intimate wedding on Ocracoke was going to be special. The island is an oasis off the coast of North Carolina, free of commercialism and the busy lives of the mainland. We ate waffles from a food truck, and were able to get everywhere on foot.
The island is special to Erin and her family, they've been visiting every year since she was young. She would spend summers wondering the island barefoot, wearing fairy wings she had made. When she and Luke started dating, she took him to Ocracoke and it quickly became a favorite getaway. What better place to have a wedding?
They rented a beautiful house on the sound, and wed in the backyard among their family friends and driftwood. Erin's wedding dress was a work of art in itself- sewed and dyed by hand. She made her first outfit when she was in third grade, and she's incredibly talented. Some of the fabric came from where her grandfather was stationed in Japan, brought back by her grandmother. Erin's mom knit the beautiful shawls for the girls, and made that amazingly epic cake. Even the blankets that provided everyone with comfort and warmth were hand dyed. This wedding weekend was perfect in every way, it allowed me to be creative and intentional, and spend time with some really wonderful humans. <3
